Rethymno Harbor
Rethymno Harbor is the small Venetian harbour at the heart of Rethymno's old town, on Crete's north coast midway between Chania and Heraklion. Ringed by fish tavernas and guarded by the 19th-century Egyptian lighthouse at its entrance, it is a working fishing harbour and the departure point for local boat excursions along the region's coastline.
A Venetian Harbour in the Old Town
Rethymno Harbor was built by the Venetians as a trading port and remains one of the best-preserved historic harbours in Crete. Tucked beneath the great Fortezza fortress, it is enclosed by a curving stone breakwater that ends at a lighthouse built during the Egyptian occupation of Crete in the 1830s. Too small for large ferries, it serves fishing boats, pleasure craft, and tourist excursion boats.
