Almyrida

Almyrida is a relaxed coastal village on Crete's north coast with a small sandy beach, a sheltered harbour, water sports, and a backdrop of olive-covered hills running down to the Apokoronas plateau.

A Family-Friendly Village on the Apokoronas Coast

Strung along a gentle curve of sandy shore between Chania and Rethymno, Almyrida has grown from a quiet fishing settlement into one of the most popular small resorts on Crete's north coast. Its appeal lies in calm, shallow water, a lively but unhurried waterfront, and easy access to some of the region's most dramatic inland landscapes. It is also a natural launch point for boat trips to nearby spots along the Apokoronas coastline.

What you'll find?

Sandy Beach & Shallow Water

The beach at Almyrida is a gently curving strip of golden sand with calm, shallow water sheltered by a small headland, making it ideal for families and swimmers of all abilities. The sea is consistently clear and warm throughout summer, and the beach is well-organised with sunbeds and facilities while retaining a relaxed feel. The backdrop of green hills adds to the charm.

Water Sports

Almyrida is one of the most popular spots on the north coast for water sports, with operators offering windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkelling gear for hire from the beach. The steady breeze that funnels along this stretch of coast makes it particularly good for windsurfing and sailing. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, a day on the water here is a day well spent.

Harbour & Waterfront

The small harbour at the eastern end of the village shelters fishing boats and pleasure craft, and the waterfront tavernas serve fresh seafood with views of the Apokoronas hills and the sea. The harbour is also a launch point for boat trips to Karga Island, Marathi, and further along the coast. The gentle evening light on the water makes this one of the nicest spots on the north coast for a sundowner.

Almyrida strikes a rare balance between lively resort and genuine local village, making it one of the most welcoming stops on Crete's north coast.
