Georgioupolis
Georgioupolis is a picturesque harbour village at the mouth of the Almyros river, known for its eucalyptus-lined beach, the tiny chapel of Agios Nikolaos on a sea islet, and a relaxed waterfront atmosphere.
Where the River Meets the Sea
Sitting at the point where the Almyros river empties into the sea at the western edge of the Gulf of Rethymno, Georgioupolis has grown from a small fishing village into one of the most charming coastal towns on Crete's north coast. The combination of a wide sandy beach, a green river valley, and a picturesque working harbour gives it a gentler and more varied character than most beach resorts. The chapel of Agios Nikolaos, standing alone on a rocky islet just offshore, has become the symbol of the town.
What you'll find?
Agios Nikolaos Chapel
The tiny whitewashed chapel of Agios Nikolaos occupies its own small islet connected to the beach by a narrow stone causeway, creating one of the most photographed scenes on Crete's north coast. The walk out along the causeway offers lovely views back toward the village and the mountains. At sunset the chapel and its islet are bathed in warm golden light.
Sandy Beach & River Estuary
Georgioupolis is backed by a wide, gently curving sandy beach that extends for several kilometres, shaded at the village end by old eucalyptus trees that give the seafront its distinctive character. The Almyros river mouth creates a shallow, lagoon-like area perfect for children, and the fresh water mixing with the sea keeps the area cool and green even in high summer. Loggerhead turtles have been spotted in the estuary.
Harbour & Waterfront
The small harbour at the western end of the village shelters fishing boats and a few pleasure craft, surrounded by tavernas and cafés serving everything from fresh fish to breakfast. The waterfront square is the social heart of the village, with locals and visitors mixing easily under the shade of eucalyptus trees. It is one of the most pleasant spots on the north coast for a slow morning coffee or an evening meal.
Georgioupolis combines natural beauty, history, and a genuinely welcoming village feel — one of the most complete destinations on Crete's north coast.
