Deep blue waters meeting the shore at Kalyves, offering views of the rugged Cretan coastline.

Kalyves

Kalyves is a friendly harbour village on the western shore of Souda Bay, with a long sandy beach, a working fishing harbour, and some of the finest views across the bay to the White Mountains.

A Relaxed Village on Souda Bay

Strung along the southern shore of Souda Bay between Chania and Almyrida, Kalyves has developed from a traditional fishing village into a popular but unspoiled small resort. The village retains its local character — fishing boats still work from the harbour, and the tavernas facing the sea serve the kind of food that has fed this community for generations. The views across Souda Bay to the White Mountains are among the finest on the north coast.

What you'll find?

Sandy Beach

The beach at Kalyves is a long, gently curving strip of sand and fine shingle with clear, calm water sheltered by the bay. Well-organised with sunbeds and facilities, it retains a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere throughout the season. The shallows are safe for children, and the bay's natural shelter means the water is almost always calm.

Working Fishing Harbour

The harbour at Kalyves is a genuine working port, with fishing boats heading out at dawn and returning by mid-morning with the day's catch. Watching the boats come in and the catch being sorted on the quayside is part of the daily rhythm of village life. Several waterfront tavernas serve fresh fish bought directly from the boats that tied up that morning.

Views Across Souda Bay

From the waterfront at Kalyves, the views across Souda Bay are spectacular — the wide, calm waters stretch east, framed by mountains on three sides and ending at the distant headlands of the Akrotiri Peninsula. On clear mornings, the White Mountains are reflected in the still water of the bay, creating a scene of extraordinary calm beauty. The sunrises here are particularly memorable.

Kalyves offers one of the most complete north coast experiences in the Chania area — beach, harbour, great food, and views that stay with you.
