The coastal landscape and village life at Marathi, Crete, viewed from the sea.

Marathi Harbor

Marathi is a small, sheltered harbour on the eastern side of the Akrotiri Peninsula, tucked into a quiet bay with calm water, a sandy beach, and rolling hills sweeping down to the sea.

A Sheltered Haven on the Akrotiri Peninsula

Marathi sits on the protected eastern side of Crete's Akrotiri Peninsula, shielded from the prevailing winds by the hills that curve around its bay. The harbour is small but perfectly formed, with fishing boats and pleasure craft moored alongside a simple quay. A few tavernas overlook the water, and a sandy beach stretches just beyond the jetty, making it one of the most pleasant and understated spots in the Chania area.

What you'll find?

Sheltered Harbour & Calm Water

The natural shelter of the bay makes Marathi one of the calmest spots for swimming on the Akrotiri Peninsula, even when the north coast can be choppy. The water in the bay is clear and shallow close to shore, deepening gradually toward the entrance. It is also a popular overnight anchorage for sailing yachts cruising the north Cretan coast.

Sandy Beach

Just beyond the harbour wall, a sandy beach curves gently along the shoreline, backed by low tamarisk trees that provide natural shade in the afternoon. The beach is quiet by north coast standards, with a relaxed atmosphere and a modest selection of sunbeds. It is ideal for a morning swim before heading out on a boat trip along the coast.

Tavernas with Sea Views

A small cluster of tavernas lines the waterfront at Marathi, serving grilled fish, mezedes, and cold drinks at tables that look directly out over the bay. The cooking is simple and unpretentious, drawing on locally caught fish and the produce of the surrounding hills. Watching the boats come and go over a plate of fresh seafood here is one of Crete's simple pleasures.

Marathi is the perfect antidote to the busier resorts of the north coast — a quiet harbour where the pace of life slows to the rhythm of the sea.
