Plaka Harbor

Plaka Harbor is the small harbour of Plaka, a former fishing village on the Gulf of Mirabello in eastern Crete, directly opposite the island of Spinalonga. Just north of Elounda, it offers the shortest boat crossing of all to the Venetian island fortress and is a quieter departure point than the busier resorts nearby.

The Closest Point to Spinalonga

Plaka sits on the shore of Mirabello Bay, facing Spinalonga across a narrow channel a few kilometres north of Elounda. The island is so close that the crossing takes only a few minutes, making Plaka's harbour the quickest way to reach Spinalonga. The village has kept the feel of a small fishing settlement, with a cluster of tavernas and pebble beaches along the waterfront.

What You'll Find

The Shortest Crossing to Spinalonga

Small boats shuttle from Plaka's harbour to Spinalonga in only a few minutes, the shortest of the island's crossings. This makes Plaka a favourite for visitors who want to spend more time on Spinalonga and less time on the water.

A Quiet Fishing Village

Plaka is far smaller and calmer than neighbouring Elounda, keeping the atmosphere of a traditional fishing village. Fish tavernas line the seafront, several serving the day's catch right beside the harbour.

Pebble Beaches and Clear Water

The village has pebble beaches with clear, calm water looking straight across to Spinalonga, popular for a relaxed swim between boat trips and meals.
