Agios Nikolaos Harbor

Agios Nikolaos Harbor is the marina and waterfront of the lively resort town of Agios Nikolaos, capital of the Lasithi region in eastern Crete. Set on the sheltered Gulf of Mirabello and joined to the town's landmark inner lake, Voulismeni, it is a busy yachting harbour and the main departure point for boat trips to the fortress island of Spinalonga and cruises around Mirabello Bay.

The Heart of Eastern Crete's Resort Coast

Agios Nikolaos sits on the western shore of the Gulf of Mirabello, one of the largest bays in the Mediterranean. Its harbour is unusual in that it opens directly onto Lake Voulismeni, a small, near-circular lake in the middle of town linked to the sea by a short channel. The waterfront combines a working marina, tour-boat berths, and a ring of cafes and restaurants, making it the social centre of the town.

What You'll Find

Boat Trips to Spinalonga

The harbour is a principal departure point for boat trips to Spinalonga, the fortified island in Mirabello Bay that served as a Venetian fortress and later a leper colony until 1957. Cruises typically combine the island with a swim stop and a visit to nearby Elounda.

Marina and Yachting

Agios Nikolaos has a well-equipped marina that shelters yachts and sailing boats, making it a popular stop on sailing routes around eastern Crete and the Aegean. Charter and rental boats also operate from here for trips along the Mirabello coast.

Lake Voulismeni and the Waterfront

The inner lake, ringed by cafes and overlooked by a low cliff, is the town's most photographed spot. From the harbour it is a short stroll to the lake, the town beaches, and the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos.

Nearby Destinations

Spinalonga Island

The Venetian island fortress of Spinalonga lies across Mirabello Bay and is reached by boat in around 30 to 45 minutes. Its well-preserved walls and poignant history make it one of eastern Crete's most visited sites.

Elounda

The resort village of Elounda, known for its luxury hotels and calm bay, is about 11 kilometres north of Agios Nikolaos — roughly a 15-minute drive — and offers an alternative, closer departure point for Spinalonga.

Kritsa and Lato

Inland, the traditional village of Kritsa and the ancient Dorian city of Lato lie about 10 to 15 kilometres from the harbour, offering a mountain and archaeological contrast to the coastal resorts.

Agios Nikolaos Harbor combines a scenic town-centre setting with real maritime function, serving as eastern Crete's main hub for Spinalonga cruises, yachting, and exploration of the Gulf of Mirabello.
